Ice Harvesting in New England

Presented by Jane Hennedy

Saturday February 28th at 2:00PM at New Ipswich Library (6 Main Street)

Join us for this illustrated talk by Jane Hennedy as she provides a crystal-clear look into a process that was commonplace in the last centuries. The hour-long program includes examples of regional collections of food preservation methods used prior to ice boxes, the opportunities to earn cold hard cash during this seasonal industry, the frosty personality of Frederic Tutor the Ice King of Boston, and with the advent of electric refrigeration, the slow melting of the ice business.

Jane Hennedy is a museum professional with more that 25 years of experience in caring for and sharing local history. She is the site manager for two 18th century farms in Rhode Island owned by Historic New England.
